Tami Neilson starts her spring tour this weekend
22-04-2019With a soulful voice straight from the golden age of soul, country and rockabilly music, Tami Neilson has been described as "A red-hot honky-tonker, somewhere between Patsy Cline and Wanda Jackson with perhaps just a little bit of Peggy Lee sophistication". Singing her heart out along endless roads and stages, from her days as a young girl in Canada touring with the Neilson Family band, opening for the likes of Johnny Cash, to her full blossoming in New Zealand as a formidable talent in her own right, Tami Neilson has won the TUI Award (New Zealand Grammy) for each of her past four albums.
Her latests album SASSAFRASS! is a party in full swing, shaking its ass and shimmying across the dance floor in gold tassels, rhinestones and a 1960s hairdo, not giving a hot damn who is watching. Tami Neilson is throwing the party, her powerhouse vocals driving it along with lung capacity like a steam locomotive. But the album is more than a party “SASSAFRASS” slang for: a sassy person who isn’t afraid to speak their mind. Exactly what Tami Neilson is, when confronted with sexism and misogyny, she throws her head back and laughs, responding with tongue planted firmly in cheek, cutting it off at the knees. Watch for yourself on her latest video she released on International Women's Day.
